Chelsea E. Manning is a network security and artificial intelligence expert, and activist. She is a former military intelligence analyst and political prisoner. Chelsea ran for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in the state of Maryland in 2018.
In 2010, Chelsea disclosed information which revealed the true nature of 21st century asymmetric warfare and diplomacy. She was held for a year in solitary confinement before her court martial trial, in 2013, before she was even tried. During her trial, she took full responsibility for her actions in a 50-page sworn statement before a military judge.
Between its forensic investigation and Chelsea’s detailed statement, the government gained exhaustive knowledge about her role in the disclosures. She served a total of seven years of her 35 year sentence before President Obama commuted her sentence to time served– she was released in May 2017.
