Why was Chelsea in prison for seven years before Former President Obama commuted her sentence?
Chelsea was sentenced to 35 years for disclosing military and diplomatic information to the public that, among other things, exposed the “true nature of 21st century asymmetric warfare.” Her disclosures have been cited in source material in thousands of articles in hundreds of news outlets, including the New York Times, Reuters, Los Angeles Times, Associated Press, Guardian, and the Washington Post.
After 7 years in prison, Chelsea's 35 year sentence was commuted by President Obama in 2017. He explains his reasoning here:
“Chelsea Manning has served a tough prison sentence…It has been my view that given she went to trial, that due process was carried out, that she took responsibility for her crime, that the sentence that she received was very disproportional — disproportionate relative to what other leakers had received, and that she had served a significant amount of time, that it made it sense to commute — and not pardon — her sentence.”
